Baby-led Weaning Esssentials

Baby-led Weaning Esssentials

It's funny how I've had two older kids and yet I still feel like a first time Mom with my third son, Gadi. Things have changed when it comes to baby trends since I first gave birth. One example is how we feed babies.

Years ago, we used to feed babies using the traditional method. This includes feeding them with purees. When my second child was born, we did the same thing to him. Now, with my third child, I was introduced to "Baby-led Weaning" and we chose this other side of the road.

"Baby-led Weaning" or "BLW" means your child is in charge of eating. This is where finger foods are introduced rather than spoon-fed purees.

If you think Baby-led Weaning is for you, make sure you've got everything that you need. Gadi needs items that will help him feed himself and will make the journey easy and enjoyable for us.

So, here are the basic items we've been using which I find invaluable:

Baby-led Weaning

1. Suction Plate and Utensils
I love the idea of using a suction plate as this prevents babies from flipping their food. It sticks really well on the tray. Plus it comes with cute designs and food dividers. The beginner spoon and fork helps my son to feed himself using utensils. This also aids in transitioning him from using hands to proper utensils.

2. Straw Cup or Regular Cups
We started our littlest man Gadi with an open cup and he learned naturally. Having a straw cup is also handy especially if you want a closed container and less spillage. Sometimes, if I want to let him drink on his own, I use the straw cup.

3. High Chair
Any high chair with a tray will do. There are different types you can choose from depending on your preference, there's wooden or plastic. Just make sure to choose easy to clean and lightweight. I would prefer a foldable one to save space when not in use.

4. Waterproof Bibs
The mess is inevitable with BLW. It is something you have to embrace if you let your baby feed himself. This is another tool to help you clean up and protect babies from the mess. I love to use the one with a catcher so there will be less food on the floor. The silicone bibs are adjustable and easy to clean.

5. Cooking Tools
There are different cutlers and bento tools you can use to add decorations to the food. It will help the food look visually appealing. You can make different shapes, themes, and styles. I'm sure you'll enjoy preparing your little one's food too.

6. Teeth and Gum Care
We want our kids to have good oral health and it should start, well, as early as they started eating solid food. An age-appropriate tooth and gum brush and tooth gel are nice to have as it promotes healthy teeth and gums.

That’s it for my Baby-Led Weaning Essentials list! My #LittlestMan Gadi is only 8 months old
and we're still learning this. We've been on the journey for over a month now and we've been enjoying the journey immensely.

Here's a compilation of our one month journey:

  1. Grabe, may different ways pa pala on how to feed a baby. The world is consistently changing talaga, during the time that I’m taking care of my nieces, most of the time spoon feeding. Siguro, I can try this BLW method to my own child soon.

  6. Being the second eldest among my first cousins, I witnessed many feeding styles and options from my aunts and uncles. I also witness how my cousins changed their eating patterns too. Suction plate really comes in handy if you hated on heavy cleaning up after a meal. But I love watching babies making messy high chairs, and feeding them also is a stress-relief - #TitoMode

  8. I was a Pediatric nurse and I've spoke with moms about baby-led weaning who were weary on what to feed their kids. So more on food (what food, how to prepare, etc) and discussions namin. Messy ang BLW but super rewarding since nadedevelop yung motor skills and eye coordination ng kids.

  14. How do you know if baby-led weaning is best for your baby? What are the advantages over spoon-fed purees?

    1. If you are willing to commit to it and let the child be in-charge of his eating. To be honest, hindi siya madali. Some advantages of BLW, it helps fine-tune motor development and helps develop healthy eating habits. It also offers babies an opportunity to explore the taste and texture of the food.

  15. This is smart! I'm just curious, can Baby led weaning be started earlier than 8th months old? like 7 months old?

    1. Yes, as long as the baby met the requirements for readiness i.e, can sit unassisted, etc.
